When the descendants of the soldiers in the daguerreotype begin to die violently, the case is assigned to Auckland police investigator Hana Westerman. The picture has a chilling subject: a small group of British soldiers posed alongside the hanged body of a Maori leader in the early days of New Zealand’s colonization. Maori screenwriter and director Michael Bennett’s first novel, Better the Blood begins with a flashback to a daguerreotype, an early type of photograph, being taken in 1863. ![]()

However Laini breaks her own rules – kissing before the 3rd date and snuggling with her love interest before they are exclusive – she does stick to the rule of not sleeping with anyone before she’s married. Laini kept saying over and over that she wasn’t a prude and that her moral code was to not have sex before marriage (I can live with that), not to kiss on a first date – her dating rule was no kissing until the 3rd date (oh, I don’t know about that one.sometimes you have to break the “rules”), no snuggling/cuddling until she’s been “dating” for a good long time, & “dating” seemed to consist of mostly hanging out & not very much passion. I did find the main character, Laini, a little bit annoying, judgmental, and self-righteous. No wonder why there weren’t any good sex scenes – I kept waiting for them to appear. ![]() I was about half way through the book (too far into it to put it down for good although I had figured out the story line & plot a long time ago) before I discovered that this was a Christian “romance” novel. The story sounded good enough for a quick, chick-lit, easy read. I was at the library checking out the latest books on the rack reserved for new books. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Vendler attacked Dove’s anthology (and Dove herself) in the New York Review of Books of 24 November 2011, and Dove returned the favour in the 22 December issue. The literary world is always set a-twitter by dust-ups between luminaries, and this one is a doozy: it features the former Poet Laureate Rita Dove, defending herself against the redoubtable literary scholar and critic Helen Vendler. As a result, it is no longer possible simply to review the book you have to review the controversy as well. That The Weekend Australian should have felt moved to comment on the situation (Frank Furedi, ‘Culture War Highlights the Banal Message of Politically Sanctioned Art’, 7–8 January 2012) is a good indicator of just how hot the issue has become. ‘To choose the best, among many good,’ says Dr Johnson in his ‘Life of Cowley’, ‘is one of the most hazardous attempts of criticism.’ The truth of this maxim is borne out nicely in the controversy surrounding – or perhaps emanating from – Rita Dove’s new selection of twentieth-century American poetry. ![]() ![]() ![]() Later he ventured into the automobile business that had started to emerge during his day.Īlthough born in Rochester, William’s family later moved to live in Lowell.
